Answer: First, people can eliminate their poor listening habits, such as finishing other people’s sentences, interrupting, and “tuning out” other people. They can do this by overcoming societal messages, with tactics such as an awareness that listening behaviors play an important role in the outcome of communication encounters. When speakers feel they are listened to with respect and attentiveness, they become better communicators and vice versa. Second, people can apply the concept of mindfulness. This holistic approach requires that people listen with the heart, body, and mind. Mindful listening focuses on the process of listening versus the payoff. Being a mindful listener requires three elements: 1)the desire to get the whole message, 2)the ability to eliminate the noisy barriers discussed previously, and 3)the willingness to place an individual agenda lower on the priority list than the speaker’s.
