Ans: Working memory is the ability to retain information while also engaging in another cognitive activity. Memory, which is an important component of learning, is often impaired in children with intellectual disability. Generally speaking, the more severe the cognitive impairment, the greater the deficits in memory. Short-term memory is especially problematic for individuals with intellectual disability; for example, they may have trouble following teacher directions given in sequence or sequential job tasks from an employer. Working memory, on the other hand, refers to the ability to retain information while simultaneously performing another cognitive task. Recalling an address while listening to directions illustrates this process. Research suggests that working memory in students with intellectual disability is significantly poorer in comparison to their typically developing peers. Impairments in working memory in pupils with intellectual disability are also linked to deficits in academic skills such as reading and arithmetic.
