Identify and discuss the essential elements for successful beginning reading, including typical behaviors children exhibit when these milestones are achieved

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Reading begins when children first notice and become curious about print. It involves both development of language and awareness of language. The essential elements for successful beginning reading include: motivation, language development, metacognitive awareness, and orthographic knowledge. Children become curious about words and other aspects of written language contributing to their motivation to learn to read. Children who are ready to learn to read exhibit early aspects of metacognitive awareness. They begin to monitor their own learning. As children move towards literacy, they become aware of aspects of print, contributing their orthographic knowledge. Early reading success also depends on language development. A firm foundation in spoken language is necessary for literacy development.
