How has intense global competition affected the American labor movement?

What will be an ideal response?

Increased globalization has completely destabilized the traditional union strongholds in mass manufacturing industries such as auto and steel. In the 1980s, intense competitive pressure resulted in concession bargaining, in which unions were forced to agree to wage freezes or cuts, reductions in benefits, and looser work rules. Even despite these concessions, there were significant job losses, further eroding union membership. Rather than bringing labor and management together to form a united front against global competition, employers became more aggressive in their anti-union campaigns. Faced with eroding membership and employer hostility, the labor movement has experienced a significant decline, now representing less than 10% of the private sector workforce.
