Why do so many young women aspire to be thin like models in magazines when they may realize that these individuals do not eat a healthy diet?
Many magazine models may also suffer from anorexia nervosa but the American culture highly values thinness. Women are rewarded for being too thin in that they often win beauty pageants or appear on the cover of magazines. Very young girls are very impressionable and want to be thin even if they are aware of the dangers of being underweight. In other cultures in which body leanness is not key to self-worth, very few people take serious risks in trying to lose weight.
