Explain how you would teach kindergartners to recognize the letters of the alphabet.

Children can be taught to recognize letters in their names, friend's names, familiar environmental print, and print used in play settings. In order to deliver this type of individualized alphabet instruction, teachers need to observe closely to learn about the types of contexts in which children notice letters. Teachers should also teach the alphabet to the whole class in a systematic way, using songs, letter charts, ABC word walls, and games. This combination of personalized instruction and direct, systematic instruction will ensure that all children have an opportunity to learn to identify and name the letters of the alphabet.
