Why, if 99% of the calcium in the body is in bones and teeth, are there such elaborate mechanisms to regulate the 1% of calcium that is in the blood?

Calcium not associated with skeletal mass is critical for life. Calcium cooperates with vitamin K to stimulate blood clotting, and is necessary for muscle contraction and transmission of nerve impulses. Calcium is needed for healthy vision, regulation of blood glucose, and cell differentiation. It is a cofactor for several enzymes needed for energy metabolism.
