The preoperational stage of development ranges from about age two to age seven. It is characterized by the acquisition of the ability to use mental images to stand for something else. This ability means that children can use words and engage in make-believe play, imitation, and drawing to represent something they have experienced. During this stage, children have a limited view of reality that comes from their own perceptions, and they assume that everyone experiences the world as they do. A further development includes reflective abstraction, the child’s ability to think about what he or she is doing. At this stage, children are actively engaged in constructing their own knowledge.
