How do hair permanents make straight hair curly?
Hair proteins contain many sulfur-containing amino acids that stabilize the hair’s structure and determine whether it is naturally straight or curly. Permanent solutions work by first breaking the disulfide bonds with an alkaline solution—this denatures the protein—and then forming new bonds which “set” the hair in the style desired.
