What are some potential drawbacks of using incentive programs to motivate independent reading?

What will be an ideal response?

Teachers need to consider carefully the potential benefits and risks of incentive programs before employing them as a regular practice in their classrooms. External rewards have been shown to hinder internal motivation in some cases. Goals focus on compliance and competition—although the amount of reading may skyrocket momentarily, it usually dwindles in the long term, doing little to encourage lifelong reading.
