Mr. Sampson watched in horror as his 10-year-old daughter hit her head on the balance beam during a gymnastics competition. What types of symptoms and behaviors should Mr. Sampson look for in his daughter after her head injury?

What will be an ideal response?

Mr. Sampson should take his daughter's head injury seriously. Head injuries are the most common and potentially serious injuries children can encounter. Mr. Sampson should watch his daughter very closely and look for signs of a concussion, which is defined as "a trauma-induced alteration in mental status that may or may not involve the loss of consciousness." In the majority of concussion cases (90%), there is no documented loss of consciousness. Mr. Sampson's daughter may experience a transient period of post-trauma amnesia or loss of mental alertness—she may be unable to maintain a cogent stream of thought or carry out a sequence of tasks. Other common symptoms of concussion include headache, dizziness or balance problems, nausea and vomiting, a foggy or dazed sensation, vision and hearing difficulties, emotional lability (strong emotions with mood swings), and fatigue. Mr. Sampson should limit his daughter's physical activities for a period of time to make sure she does not experience any additional head injury.

Imagine that you are teaching at a school that serves students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. The students tend to congregate in groups along ethnic lines, to the point where they are quite "clique-ish" and exclusive, and hostilities are building up among the groups. Using guidelines presented in the textbook, describe three strategies that you and your fellow teachers might use to foster

positive interaction and friendships across the groups. Describe each strategy in a separate paragraph, and be specific about what you might do. What will be an ideal response?
