Discuss the difference between primary and secondary damage.

What will be an ideal response?

When assessing the damage, the first area that one should evaluate is the primary or direct damage. This part of the damage is sustained by the vehicle because it came into direct contact with another object or vehicle. This area of the damage is also known as the point-of-impact (POI) damage. POI damage is any type of damage that affects the vehicle, whether it is structural or merely cosmetic, at or near the point of impact.
Depending on the severity of the impact, this area of the damage may manifest itself as very sharply creased or folded and bent metal damage that may require cutting away to remove it. Removing it may expose additional damage to the area underneath that may require repairing or replacement as well. The secondary damage is any other damage incurred that was not contacted by the impact object. It may be immediately adjacent to the POI or it may be located in an area seemingly completely unaffected or remote from the POI.

In 1908, Charles Street of the Washington, D.C., baseball team caught a baseball thrown from the top of the Washington Monument. If the height of the ball before it was thrown was 165 m, and the mass of the baseball was 0.145 kg, what was the potential energy of the baseball before it was thrown? Assume that the acceleration due to gravity was 9.81 m/s2.

Given: m = 0.145 kg, z = 165 m; g = 9.81 m/s2 What will be an ideal response?
