Describe kwashiorkor and miasmas and explain how malnutrition is currently classified

Historically, severe child malnutrition was characterized as either protein deficiency called kwashiorkor—the disease of the weaned child; or miasmas—the emaciation caused by energy deficiency. Today, child malnutrition is described in terms of chronic malnutrition—evidenced by stunting from long-term under nutrition; and severe acute malnutrition—characterized by rapid weight loss, wasting, and nutritional edema from recent or sudden food deprivation.
