Under what conditions would the following methods be useful teaching techniques: role-playing, debates, simulations, and laboratories?

Action-oriented techniques such as role-playing, debates, simulations, and laboratories encourage learners to participate and exercise a level of control over what is learned.
• In role-playing, participants engage in a spontaneous and emotional acting out of a scenario. This technique is useful in order for learners to analyze the contents of the role-play to identify issues that have transpired.
• In an educational debate, two opposing groups present affirmative and opposing perspectives on a controversial issue. Critical thinking and analytical skills are applied, reflecting higher level cognitive abilities. Debates are most applicable for adolescent and adult audiences.
• In a simulation, learners engage in activities reflecting a symbolic representation of a particular life experience. They are provided a role and interact in a scenario under specific guidelines. Learners experience the complexities and emotions of real-life in an environment protected from actual risks and consequences.
• Laboratories are useful in providing learners with the opportunity to apply a principle, investigate a phenomenon, or to practice a skill via a planned, supervised practice experience.
