Teachers observe a kindergarten child drawing a treasure map. Soon they notice that many other children in the class are also drawing different types of maps. Teachers discuss why the children are doing this. What do they gain by drawing maps? How can we encourage this exploration? They listen to what the children say the maps mean to them. Many of them say their map shows their home. Teachers bring in other maps, such as street maps, that show the children’s hometown. Soon the children identify where their homes are located on the maps. After this, the teachers guide the children in the creation of a group map, which shows the homes of all the children in the class. Each home is labeled. Children notice who lives close to them and what houses they visited. Through this activity, the children develop their skill of symbolic representation.

Brianna is presenting some challenges in your class. She can be demanding. She constantly chats to the students in desks near hers, and she is often off task. Today she is giving in to the urge to make kitten sounds during silent work time, and she laughs when other students look at her. She does reduce the inappropriate behavior when you are in close proximity to her or give her “the look.” Marshall would say that Brianna’s behavior is at what level of the hierarchy?

a) Level A. b) Level B. c) Level C. d) Level D.
