In order for research to be useful and bring new insights, it
must be unbiased. The means researchers must be careful with sampling,
interviewer influence and distortion by respondents. Biased research can cause
practitioners to make wrong decisions as well as waste money. It is wise when
conducting research to become familiar with the codes of ethics that prevail in
the social research field. One such code is excerpted from the American
Educational Research Association's Ethical Standards. This code states very
clearly that participants are volunteers who have the right to withdraw from a
research study at any time.
