Why would teachers want to tap into family expertise with regard to religious beliefs and customs? What precautions should teachers take when planning to discuss religious practices in the classroom?
What will be an ideal response?
Reasons for tapping into family expertise:
It is a good way to show respect and build trusting relationships with families.
It recognizes families’ funds of knowledge and expertise in educating children.
It reflects diversity positively and recognizes that multicultural studies enrich the curriculum and children’s abilities to think globally and understand diversity.
It recognizes the diversity in the community and helps to bridge community involvement in children’s education
Precautions:
Diversity of religious practices must be respected (teachers may have to prepare students and discuss how to show respect when various religious viewpoints are shared).
Families may not appreciate their children learning about other religious practices—teachers must be ready for families to question/object and have and articulate academic/curricular benefits behind sharing the information.
Teachers cannot force students to participate in religious activities.
