Briefly summarize causes of hearing loss

As with other disabilities, hearing loss is caused by a combination of genetic, biomedical, and/or environmental factors. There are hereditary causes of hearing loss that are responsible for some congenital hearing loss, but most congenital loss is due to infections during pregnancy or soon after birth. Other prenatal causes include exposure to viruses, bacteria, and other toxins. Postnatal causes include bacterial meningitis and acute ear infections. A blow to the head can cause sensorineural hearing loss due to damage to the cochlea.
