What is it about racial profiling that most people find unacceptable? Are there any situations in which law enforcement’s use of racial features or ethnic characteristics may be appropriate in targeting suspected criminals? If so, what would those

situations be?

What will be an ideal response?

The idea of racial profiling is quite controversial. The concern here is really with what might be referred to as false positives—that is, the police officer assuming that an African American male driving in a white suburban neighborhood can only be there because of the intent to commit crime. Although we know that law enforcement officers are very good at recognizing various signs that result in suspicion, often they are wrong and thus innocent people are inconvenienced, maybe humiliated, and certainly offended. It is reprehensible when such decisions are discriminatory.
