If negotiators focus attention on the other party to the exclusion of themselves, they may set their goals strictly as a reaction to the other's anticipated goals and targets. Reactive strategies are likely to make negotiators feel threatened and defensive and lessen their flexibility and creativity. In contrast, being proactive about target setting permits negotiators to be flexible in what they will accept and improves the likelihood of arriving at a mutually satisfactory outcome.
