A code corresponds to an individual fragment of data, and coding is the first step in the analysis process. Codes are generally disconnected from one another, and are brought together through categories, which give meaning to the relationships, differences, similarities or interactions among codes. Categories are the basis for themes, which are analytically-driven statements about the data. Themes bring together various categories – meaning they are based on your interpretations of the data.
