Discuss the etiology of cancer.
What will be an ideal response?
The etiology of cancer is multifactorial: genetic, environmental, and/or lifestyle factors result in genetic and epigenetic changes and unrestrained proliferation of cells. Risk factors include growing older; tobacco use; exposure to sunlight, ionizing radiation, certain chemicals and other substances (carcinogens), some viruses and bacteria, and certain hormones; family history of cancer; alcohol consumption; poor diet; lack of physical activity; and being overweight. Prevention guidelines were developed by the American Cancer Society (ACS). Screening is available for some cancers—for example, the Papanicolaou (Pap) test and cervical exam screen for cervical cancer—but unavailable for many others.
