Although broad generalizations can be misused, research has found a few general
differences between how men and women approach listening. Men tend to listen for
patterns, tend to listen for the ?big picture?, direct their listening efforts toward a goal,
listen to solve a problem, focus on the bottom line, and see the purpose of listening as to
receive facts. Women tend to be more empathic and subjective, look for relationships
among pieces of information, and rely more upon meaning communicated through
nonverbal behavior. They listen to establish personal relationships; they can focus on
more than one thing at a time and tend to shift between competing messages.
