The examples-only method is used to present vocabulary terms and concepts that cannot be readily explained by using a synonym or definition. In teaching vocabulary through examples, the teacher constructs a set of examples, half of which are of the concept (positive examples) and half of which are of a similar but different concept (nonexamples). The set must be carefully designed to show the range of positive examples and rule out possible misinterpretations. For example, when ovals are introduced, a variety of ovals should be presented to demonstrate the range of figures called ovals. The nonexamples used when teaching ovals should include circles so that the students will not misidentify circles as ovals. As the examples are presented, the teacher points to each example, saying, “This is an oval” or “This is not an oval,” and then she tests the students by asking, “Is this an oval?"
