Why are the bones of the wrist and vertebrae more vulnerable to the effects of osteoporosis than the long bones of the femur or humerus?


The irregular bones do not have the concentric pattern or strength of compact bones found in long bone shafts. The irregular bones have more of a honey comb structure that shows the effects of thinning more dramatically than compact bone. The bones of the lower back bear a lot of downward and upward forces and may compress if the structure is not dense.
