When disassembling tapered connections to service or replace parts, there are several ways to get them apart:
1. Tapers can usually be separated using a puller.
2. Linkage parts can also be separated by deforming the outside of the taper using two hammers.
3. A tie-rod separator, sometimes called a pickle fork, can be used if the part will not be reused. The pickle fork often cuts the seal and ruins the part, so be very careful when performing this procedure.
