Three types of chemical reactions important in human physiology are (1 ) decomposition reactions, in which a molecule is broken down into smaller fragments; (2 ) synthesis reactions, in which small molecules are assembled into larger ones; and (3 ) exchange reactions, in which parts of the reacting molecules are shuffled around to produce new products.
