Freud suggests that behavior results from the interaction of three subsystems in personality: the id (source of instinctual drives, the pleasure principle), the ego (mediator between the demands of the id and the external world, the reality principle), and the superego (conscience, internalization of societal morals, and taboos). Inner (intrapsychic) conflicts arise when these three make incompatible demands on the individual. Freud suggests three types of anxiety: reality, neurotic, and moral anxiety. The ego handles anxiety either rationally or with ego-defense mechanisms.
