Answers may vary. In the healthy person, blood glucose levels rise after a meal. In response, insulin is secreted which stimulates glucose uptake by cells, thus removing it from the blood. The blood glucose levels return to normal within two hours. In the diabetic, the blood glucose level rises greatly and remains elevated for several hours. Insulin is either not produced, as in type I diabetes, or the insulin receptor function is impaired, as in type II diabetes. Since glucose uptake by cells is impeded by the lack of functioning insulin, levels rise greatly and remain high. This is a dangerous situation.
