Following repeated observations, the organized notes can reveal patterns in behavior, document developing skills, and suggest specific behaviors on which to focus. Findings from the analysis can then be related to a developmental scale or to learning standards to determine how the children are doing and what skills need to be addressed next. Additionally, notes can be used to compare learning during different periods of time. Reflecting on informal assessment notes and findings assists adults in determining changes that occur in a child's behavior or performance as a result of different social situations (e.g., settings, time of day, peers, materials). It also allows adults to determine the impact of instructional modifications so that high-quality learning occurs.
